Reproductive Health Meets Punk Rock: Vans Warped Tour 2012

Our table, just before the gates opened
The Vans Warped Tour, an event experiencing its 16th year of existence, is a musical and extreme sports festival that travels across North America every summer.  In recent years, the tour has included over 100 bands annually and reaches hundreds of thousands of fans per summer.  Genres of music range from punk and metal to pop and rap.  In addition to music, the tour offers space to vendors, organizations, and non-profits.

Our hardworking interns
As in years past, we were present at the 2012 Vans Warped Tour, ready with free literature, sunscreen, and condoms. The Chicago stop of the tour was held in Tinley Park at the Midwest Bank Amphitheater on July 7th, this past Saturday.  All day long, our volunteers and interns endured the 100+ degree heat to spread information about the importance of the upcoming election for issues of woman's rights and reproductive health care.

This election cycle is a particularly important one for Planned Parenthood, women, and proponents of reproductive health care rights. We have observed, in the past year, an unprecedented attack on a woman's right to govern her own body, an unfounded negativity regarding a health care plan that helps millions afford basic health services, and an increasing amount of bias animosity towards Planned Parenthood and the invaluable health provisions we offer. In order to combat such high-stake threats to the well-being of women, men, and families, voters must be aware of such issues and vote for candidates who will oppose harmful legislation and policies.

concert-goers interested in learned about the upcoming election
Despite the heat, the day was as successful as it was enjoyable.  Almost all of our materials were exhausted by the end of the concert, our tent staff reported countless positive interactions with concert goers, and nearby stages provided a pleasant soundtrack for everyone at our booth.  We were even mentioned during a performance by band Senses Fail, who cited how valuable Planned Parenthood's resources are.  We'd like to thank our staff and interns for all the effort they put into this day, organizers of the Vans Warped Tour for allowing us to be present at their behemoth of a tour, and all of the concert-goers who took the time to stop by and chat with us!
