2011 Chicago Municipal Elections: The Results Are In!

A big thank you to everyone who voted yesterday in the elections! 41% of registered voters took the time to participate in this year's elections, a lower fraction of voters than have typically participated in open mayoral races in the past (68% when Richard M. Daley was elected). For the first time in twenty-two years, the city of Chicago elected a Mayor to office that wasn't Richard M. Daley. Congratulations to Rahm Emanuel!

Emanuel, a former White House Chief of Staff, was elected to the mayoral office yesterday, avoiding a runoff election with 55% percent of the vote.  Planned Parenthood Illinois Action is thrilled to have one of our endorsed, pro-choice candidates in this important political post.

Rep. Susana Mendoza was elected as city clerk with 60% of the vote, and Treasurer Stephanie Neely was reelected, running unopposed.

Altogether, 14 Alderman races have been pushed into runoff elections which will take place on April 5th. Check out the Planned Parenthood Illinois Action Website for a full list of the election results, including all 50 wards, and see who the newly elected representative is in your area.  If there is a runoff election scheduled for your ward, be sure to get out there and vote for the pro-choice candidates!
