Save the Date! Free Film Screening On The Oppression of Women in Iran

Facets Multi-Media will present a free-admission screening of Jafar Panahi’s film, The Circle, on Sunday, January 16th, 2011 at 1:00PM at Facets Multi-Media in Chicago in protest of the recent sentencing of Panahi and his colleague, filmmaker Muhammad Rasoulof, to six years in prison. Facets distributes Rasoulof’s film, “Twilight.”

The Circle, a film about the struggles of various women in Iran, won the Golden Lion Award in the 2000 Venice Film Festival.  The screening will be followed by a discussion led by Kaveh Ehsani, assistant professor of International Studies at DePaul University , whose special area of interest is the Middle East.

Panahi was arrested July, 2009 after joining the mourning for protesters killed in the wake of the disputed Presidential election. He was re-arrested in February 2010, together with Rasoulof, while they were working on a film at Panahi’s house. Both were refused permission to travel. In addition to the six-year jail term, Panahi is forbidden to make films, write scripts, leave the country or speak with journalists for a period of 20 years.

The seating will be first come, first served!  Mark your calendar and don't miss this amazing opportunity to view this important film.  To learn more about Facets, click here.

I'll be there! Panahi's films have always been critical of a regime that does not treat women as equals in Iranian society. He's a true feminist filmmaker and his films are so important!
