Free Testing Could Save Your Life

In Chicago, nearly 20,000 people are living with HIV/AIDS, and Illinois ranks 7th highest among the 50 states in cumulative AIDS cases.

But why might this be relevant to you?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 232,000 Americans are living with HIV, but have not been diagnosed. That’s one out of five people living with HIV who don’t know it! Unfortunately, those who don’t know they are infected cannot take advantage of the medical treatments that can keep them alive for many years. And those who don’t know they are infected don’t realize they can transmit HIV to others. As more people start talking about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV, and getting tested for them, our community will be safer and healthier.

So, how do you protect your sexual health for years to come?

Participate in the first Be Greater Than AIDS: Get Yourself Tested Week! As part of GYT week, PPIL is offering free HIV testing at the Englewood Planned Parenthood health center from June 19-27. Low-cost HIV testing will also be available at all of our other Chicagoland health centers. Patients can make an appointment online or call 1-800-230-PLAN.

In partnership with MTV, the Kaiser Family Foundation and the CDC, Planned Parenthood urges Americans, especially young people, to get tested for HIV and other STDs in the week leading up to National HIV Testing Day (June 27th). The goal is to break down the barriers to talking about sexually transmitted diseases and getting tested.
