I Think We Need to Have "The Talk"

Although the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents speak to their children about sex early in their lives, too many young adults are experimenting in potentially risky sexual behavior without ever having "the talk."

Often times, parents underestimate their children's knowledge and experience with sex. For some parents, it can be a hard subject to bring up.

According to a study performed by Megan Beckett, a social scientist with the Rand Corp. in Santa Monica, CA, "More than 40 percent of adolescents are having intercourse before parents have talked to them about STD symptoms, condom use, choosing birth control and what to do if your partner refuses to use a condom."

The Planned Parenthood website has tools for parents on how to speak to their children about sex and how to protect themselves.
