Candidate Spotlight: Alexi Giannoulias

In preparation for the Illinois primary on February 2, 2010, Planned Parenthood Illinois Action has endorsed a list of candidates that are 100% pro-choice and committed to protecting reproductive rights in Illinois. In the coming weeks, keep your eye out for candidate spotlights like this one!

For our first spotlight, Planned Parenthood Illinois Action is featuring current State Treasurer of Illinois, Alexi Giannoulias. Mr. Giannoulias is PPIA's endorsement for US Senate.

Since the first day of his term as Treasurer, Giannoulias has been committed to ending corruption in Illinois politics. One of his first initiatives was an executive order that enacted wide-spread ethics reform by banning contributions to his campaign from office employees, contractors and banks.

His main priorities include creating incentives for purchasing hybrid cars, therefore creating more jobs, providing financial aid for the children of fallen soldiers, and combating inefficiency in our governmental system.

Position on choice: Giannoulias believes that a woman's decision to have an abortion is deeply personal, and he is committed to protecting the right to make that decision. He opposes any legislation or constitutional amendment that would overturn the Roe v. Wade.

In addition, Giannoulias understands that there are clear steps the government can take to prevent the rate of unintended pregnancies and abortion. These steps include greater access to contraceptives and comprehensive sex education programs that teach safe sex.
