Quigley Speaks Out Against Anti-Choice Amendment
Illinois Congressman Mike Quigley spoke out today against the anti-choice amendment to the FY 2010 Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act (H.R. 3293) offered by Rep. Mike Pence (R, IN-06), which seeks to restrict Title X funds from being made available to Planned Parenthood health centers.

Quigley understands that The Title X program provides crucial comprehensive family planning services as well as a wide range of other preventive health care. Voters strongly favor legislation that will increase access to family planning services, particularly for low-income women. This amendment will decrease access to services for low-income, uninsured and underinsured individuals – by restricting access to their most trusted provider.
· 76% of all voters (and 79% of voters who are conflicted about abortion) strongly agree that we should do everything we can to try to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies in America through common-sense measures such as access to contraception.
· 75% of all voters (and 82% of voters who are conflicted about abortion) strongly agree that Congress should protect the right of individuals to get contraception without government interference or intrusion.
Title X is America’s Family Planning Program
The Title X program provides comprehensive family planning services as well as a wide range of other preventive health care, including:
o breast exams and instruction on breast self-examination
o Pap tests for early detection of cervical cancer or precancerous conditions
o testing for high blood pressure
o screening and appropriate treatment for sexually transmitted infections
o HIV screening
o counseling on adoption, foster care, and pregnancy termination
o referrals to specialized health care
Pursuant to Federal Statute, no Title X funds are spent on abortions.
