Statement From Steve Trombley on Obama's Executive Order
"President Obama today fulfilled one of his campaign promises by reversing the global gag rule, a set of onerous restrictions placed on foreign nongovernmental organizations that receive U.S. family planning assistance.
For the past eight years, the Bush Administration’s gag rule has prevented thousands of health care providers around the world from making basic services such as birth control accessible to women. Instead of reducing the incidence of abortion around the world, the global gag rule denied women access to the very tools that can help them avoid an unintended pregnancy. The effect of the egregious global gag rule is a dangerous reduction in reproductive health services worldwide, such as family planning information, services and supplies; and HIV/AIDS prevention and counseling — a reduction that too often costs women their lives.
Planned Parenthood has been committed to reversing the gag rule because we are not only the most trusted provider of women’s health care in the U.S., but we have spent nearly 40 years working overseas to ensure that the world’s most vulnerable women have access to reproductive health care.
Overturning the global gag rule is a clear indication that this Administration will work to make the U.S. a leader in ensuring freedom, justice and rights worldwide. Planned Parenthood looks forward to working with the Obama Administration to make health care for women a priority in the U.S. and overseas."
