Cervical Cancer Screening Month

It's a brand new year and while you're working on that resolution to exercise more often, you might also want to think about another way to jump start a healthy 2008. January is cervical cancer screening month and the time for women to schedule that appointment we've been putting off. Last year, an estimated 11,150 women were diagnosed with cervical cancer, however, this is a preventable disease. Regular cancer screenings, consistent and correct condom use, and the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine are the best ways to prevent cervical cancer.

Two types of HPV cause 70% of cases of cervical cancer and the HPV vaccine protects against these types. The vaccine, known as Gardisil, is currently available at some Planned Parenthood health centers. To learn more information about the HPV vaccine, click here.
