In the Aurora City Council Meeting

Daily Kos’s Got a Grip has posted about their experience inside the Aurora City Council meeting. They do a great job examining the major arguments and falsehoods the anti-choice side kept spouting and takes them down one by one.

They also express frustration that Planned Parenthood did not have more people in the city council meeting itself to counter these claims.

We are extremely grateful for Got a Grip’s participation in the city council process. As you can see we were able to turn out hundreds in support of our clinic. While the pro-choice citizens of Aurora have mobilized and become engaged in this issue, in many cases it was too late for them to get on the list to speak for this meeting. We did encourage our supporters to sign up a head of time so they could make a statement. It seems that many choose not to and we can only speculate as to why that is – it’s clear from our turn out that it’s not for a lack of support.

In the meantime we will do everything we can to make it more clear to Aurora citizen’s that they must sign up to make a statement ahead of time and to support the Aurora resident’s who choose to do this. We hope we can count on Got a Grip’s support in getting the word out to more Aurora residents about the city council process and the need for residents to sign up ahead of time and comment on this issue. We’re working right now on finding out what the procedure will be for the next city council meeting and we will post that information as soon as we find out.

Got A Grip also expresses their frustration that there are not more people are not fully mobilized and aware that a woman’s right to access abortion services is not set in stone. If you are tired of the anti-choice people having their say at the expense of ours, join our email action network. We’ll keep you updated on how you can become involved.

Just to help a little- the City Clerk's office number is 630-844-3615, not 19 as posted earlier. Also, they don't always pick up the phone and don't really return messages, which is how I got so low on the list- I called and had to call again and again until I got through, putting me pretty low on the list.

I just called and this time around I'm #8- are we speaking at this council meeting again? If so, the spots are still open- much more so than last week.

But what to say? Not that I want a list of things to read off of, but I'd like to know what PP's defense is to the claims made at the last City Council meeting.

When we spoke with Rachel in the city clerk's office she indicated that the meeting on Tues. Oct. 2 is a "Committee of the Whole" meeting. The clerk's office said that the meeting would be open to the public, but that there would not be a public comment period.

We hope you will join us for a rally at city hall and we plan to have staff and supporters in the meeting.

You may find this open letter to the citizen's of Aurora helpful: http://www.auroraplannedparenthood.org/press/FR_beacon_9.6.pdf

Thanks!

I also found it a little frustrating last week at the City Council meeting. I agree with missy who said "I'd like to know what PP's defense is to the claims made at the last City Council meeting." What can we say to get PP to open?
