Strengthen global HIV prevention
While the U.S. is a leader in global funding to prevent HIV/AIDS, our funding policies are falling short for women and girls. Much of President Bush's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (called PEPFAR) is ideologically driven, depriving women and girls of more effective, evidence-based solutions.
At least a third of funds from PEPFAR must go toward abstinence-until-marriage programs, which have proven to be ineffective in preventing new HIV infections. Critical HIV prevention measures are often separated from other reproductive health services as well. Altogether, these policies fail to address the reality of women's lives. We need HIV prevention programs rooted in effective solutions.
Take Action: Urge Senators Durbin and Obama to lead on this issue!
